This cartridge is the result of giving the “Weatherby treatment” to the legendary 375 H&H. By enlarging the case to hold more powder, Roy Weatherby was able to achieve 200 more fps than the respected Holland & Holland version. After many years out of production, the 375 was reintroduced in 2001.

I inherited a Model 70 with a 1948 production but in .375 Weatherby. I wish I could find more info. The 300 are a bit brutal, but with lighter bullets it shoots so well. New Monolithic Bullets could be the ticket. Wish they would make some lighter load for Mule deer and Elk sized. I have taken Mule deer with both 225 gr. and 250 gr. They should chamber some rifles for this again. It is a powerhouse and winner. The brass is the best. I got some very good groups at 2960 fps on the 225.

Weatherby really needs to bring this back, again. Amazing on game- reasonable recoil, and , in the real world, gives up hardly anything on the .378 WM. Stand magazine and Magnum bolt face, and one can shoot .375 HH- what is not to like? One of Roy’s best, yet seems almost forgotten.

Had a Winchester M70 375 H&H rechambered to 375 Weatherby prior to my first hunt in Africa. Traveled to Weaterby in South Gate CA to get a supply of 375 cartridges and bought their entire supply (asked them to search the back room). This included both 270 and 300 grain. I distinctly remember the assistant saying that the bullets were hand-turned on a lathe. Took a large Jumbo in Zambia that same year in the late 1980’s. Also took buffalo and hippo on the same trip. Still have several boxes in my gun safe collecting dust. Since the 375 chambering allows use of standard 375 H&H, I took a large brownie in Alaska using the standard cartridge since the power of the Weatherby wasn’t required for soft-skinned game. This gun and cartridge was taken on every other trip I took to Africa and it never failed. Fabulous cartridge and I agree with others that all my Professional Hunters were amazed at its accuracy and power. Unfortunately, those days are in the rear view mirror, but thankfully, the memories of those exploits remain as vivid today as when they first occurred.

What a shame that Weatherby decided to stop producing rifles chambered to this grand cartridge. Great performance at reasonable big game ranges with easily managed recoil and increased magazine capacity compared to Weatherby’s Big Five cartridges.

I love my .375 Weatherby. Outstanding terminal performance on game, great accuracy, and relatively flat shooting while delivering a big payload. Anyone considering a .375 H&H would be well advised to consider the Weatherby chambering. I handload Barnes 270gr. LRX @ 2850 fps, giving 4900ft-lbs at the muzzle. My .375 Weatherby shoots 375 H&H ammunition from Remington and Hornady very well, so I don’t have to worry about ammunition options in a pinch.
I know my rifle and ammo setup has more kinetic energy than a 416 Rigby at 100 yards, but I’m not one to oversell capability, I like to let the results speak for themselves. Professional Hunters and Trackers in Africa I’ve hunted with had rave reviews of the cartridge’s performance. I have had questions like: “what are you shooting? That thing hits hard!†After seeing some of the cartridge’s performance, I have had comments like: “You have a very accurate rifle that does a lot of damage downrange, it is very confidence inspiring as a PH to know that!â€
A PH asked to shoot my rifle while we were taking an afternoon off, and after he shot a sub-MOA group at 300 yards, he could only say, “I LOVE THIS RIFLE!†So do I, I won’t ever sell it.
